In April 2026 we completed a back garden makeover in Weston Favell old village, Northampton: a new Autumn Brown Indian sandstone patio, a large gravel garden with a circular centrepiece, and privacy screening down the side of the house.
The result is a garden that looks good all year round and takes very little looking after: generous paving for sitting out, gravel in place of a lawn that needs mowing, and a side passage that feels private and tidy.
An Autumn Brown Indian sandstone patio
Autumn Brown is one of the most popular Indian sandstones, with warm browns, golds and greys running through every pack. We laid it in a random pattern of mixed slab sizes, which shows off the variation in colour and avoids long straight joints running across the patio.
The patio wraps around the back of the house and finishes in a sweeping curve where it meets the gravel, rather than a hard straight edge. Contrasting block edging runs along the house and frames the path, tying in with the edging around the gravel feature.
A low-maintenance gravel garden
Beyond the patio, most of the garden is now gravel. At its centre is a circular feature filled with blue-grey chippings, edged in multi-coloured blocks with a single paving slab at its heart. It gives the space a focal point and breaks up what would otherwise be a large, plain area.
A gravel garden like this suits anyone who wants an outdoor space that stays neat without weekly work. There is no lawn to mow and no muddy patches in winter, and the established borders around the edge still give the garden plenty of greenery.
Privacy screening down the side of the house
We paved the side passage in the same sandstone, so the patio carries on around the house, and fitted green privacy screening along the boundary wall. It turns a narrow, bare passage into a softer space and gives the homeowners more privacy.
