In February 2026 we built a large timber deck for a home in Abington, Northampton, with handrails, slatted privacy screens and spotlights set into the boards. It gives the owners an outdoor space they can use from morning until well after dark.
A large deck across the back of the house
The deck runs across the back of the house, giving a level, usable space straight out of the back doors. We used grooved timber decking boards, and because the deck sits higher than the garden, we finished it with a wide timber step down to the lawn so getting on and off it is easy.
Handrails and privacy screening
A timber handrail with spindles runs along the open end of the deck, making the raised edge safer and giving the space a finished look. Along the sides, we fixed slatted privacy screens above the existing brick garden walls. They add height and privacy from neighbouring gardens while still letting light and air through.
Spotlights for evenings outside
We also fitted spotlights into the decking boards along the walls and the balustrade. They light the edges of the deck after dark, so it is safer to use in the evening and looks good from inside the house too.
